I’ll start with a confession: I’ve never used an epilator before. I know some women swear by them because the results last so much longer than shaving, but the idea of a gadget that ripped my hairs out at the roots never really appealed to me (for obvious reasons I thought it would be super painful). Plus, some of the older metal versions looked a little scary. Thankfully, epilators have come a long way since they debuted in the ’80s, and I decided it was about time to give one a try.
My first impression of the Philips Satinelle Prestige Wet & Dry Epilator (BRE650): It’s basically a spa in a box! Not only will it remove unwanted hair (duh), but it also comes with different attachments, like a body massager and body exfoliation brush that can help you relax. Personally, I always joke about having a masseuse on hand at all times—and now I do. Not only does the massaging head soothe the strained muscles in my neck and shoulders, it also increases blood flow giving my skin a healthier glow. Speaking of which, use the exfoliation brush all over your limbs before your next self-tanner sesh, and your colour will be much more even.
Moving onto the epilator itself, I was pleasantly surprised that it has a ceramic head instead of a metal one. Ceramic is way less intimidating, and it also provides a better grip so fewer hairs are missed. The next thing I noticed was the built-in light: This helped me catch fine hairs that might have otherwise escaped my attention. (There’s nothing worse than shaving your legs at home, and then seeing them in the sunlight and realizing how many strays somehow avoided the blade). Most importantly, I barely felt a thing when I started using the epilator on my legs. It’s specially designed to grab and pull out hairs in one rapid movement, so it’s gentler than previous models. This patented system also delivers better results, so you can go longer between hair-removal sessions—that’s what I call a win-win.
