How I’m Using Biotin to Regrow My Hair

There are two things I cherish most in my life: my dog and my hair. When I started to lose one of them (it wasn’t my dog), I literally did not know what to do. I remember it so clearly: I was getting ready one morning and felt a smooth, loonie-sized patch of skin on the back of my head. It was a bald patch! So many thoughts ran through my head, so I went to see my doctor, stat. Later that week he told me that I have alopecia areata, and that to fix it I can get steroid shots in my head to regrow the hair. Since I hate needles, that was a huge no-no for me. So I decided to do my research and find a more natural way to grow my hair back. After countless hours of coffee drinking and research, I found out three things:

  1. The hair should grow back eventually, taking between six months and a year.
  2. It’s an auto-immune disease that has no real cause
  3. The vitamin biotin can help regrow hair

After two months of sulking, I noticed my hair getting dryer and thinner, so I decided to give biotin a try. I used it in two different ways, in a shampoo and in supplements.

Biotin Supplements:
Biotin is found in several foods such as carrots, liver, yeast and bananas, but only in small doses. It’s supposed to help strengthen and lengthen your hair. I was tired of wearing my hair up or strategically clipping it to cover the empty patch on my head, so I spoke to my doctor and got the OK to give biotin supplements a try.

OGX Thick & Full Biotin Shampoo
I really wanted to kick my hair regrowth into high gear. Luckily, OGX makes a Biotin shampoo that I truly love. It smells flowery and fresh and it’s a pretty shade of lilac. After the first use I was amazed because my hair actually felt a bit thicker (thanks to the collagen in the shampoo) This. Stuff. Works. Fewer strands fall out in the shower and I’m back to using my thicker hair ties.

The Results:
I’ve been using this dynamic duo for about a month, and I’ve started to see hair growth. I’m ecstatic to feel little hairs growing on that spot, not to mention my overall hair length has grown about half an inch as well. The only slight downside to increasing my biotin intake is that, not only does the hair on my head grow faster, but my overall body hair and nails grow faster as well. So that means more money spent at the nail salon and monitoring my eyebrows for caveman status. But now I can say I’m on the right track!
