The open road. The blaring tunes. Snacking on foods I wouldn’t typically eat – not even if I were Netflixing on a couch. That’s what the long weekend means to me. And since Chevrolet loaned me a Cruze for the weekend, I’m going to carpe the diem out of the next three days. But with Labour Day weekend coming up (and a birthday too), I’ve decided to take a closer look at what I’m packing for snacks and consider better (ahem, healthier) options. Well, healthier than pop, chips and beef jerky. And to make sure they meet my cravings, I’ve added a junk food meter (rated out of five). Here goes!
Energy to go
I would like to think I could make my own energy balls. But to be honest, that’s not going to happen. These MadeGood ones are not just organic, they’re also wheat-free, non-GMO, certified vegan and contain one serving of veggies. As long as it has chocolate, I’m game.
🍭🍭🍭I was missing the crunch of chips, until I had a few of these. (Psst! They’re way smaller than you’d expect.)
Speaking of chocolate… check out these President’s Choice Fibre Chocolate Brownies. They’re not as moist as high-fat, icing-covered brownies, but when you need chocolate, these hit the spot.
🍭🍭🍭It’s more like a chocolate Fig Newton, but I don’t mind.
Nothing tastes quite like a Kellogg’s Rice Krispies square. These are made with brown rice. Don’t expect a boost in fibre (it’s got 0 grams), but there’s barely any fat. Besides, it tastes like childhood.
🍭🍭These are OK. TBH, I think my mom created an unreasonable gooey expectation for the number of marshmallows to be used in making Rice Krispies Squares. I was obv spoiled as a kid.
As much as I love road trips, sometimes the driving can be boring. So a caffeine kick is a must. Instead of coffee or pop, I’m packing this V8 Energy Pomegranate Blueberry drink. Think energy drink – but without the questionable source of caffeine and mounds of sugar. Shocker: It’s only got 11 grams of sugar and is made from fruit juice and green tea (for the caffeine).
🍭🍭🍭🍭 While I do miss the bubbles, the berry flavour is sweet enough.
Sour candies are a must. No sweets, no deal. Enter Dare Real Sour Strips. They’re made without artificial colours or flavours. I like the banana ribbon the best.
🍭🍭🍭🍭🍭 The tart and sweet flavour satisfies my need for a sugar jolt.
[This #carselfie was not taken while driving. Take a look in my sunglasses, you’ll see I’m in a parking lot with the receipt on the dash. I’m vain, but not foolish.]
