We already know smoothies are a super easy way to get a quick hit of healthy nutrients… but I never thought about how a smoothie could actually be good for my skin.
Top Irish chef, Clodagh McKenna (you might have seen her on The Rachael Ray Show, NBC’s Today Show, or CTV’s The Marilyn Denis Show) recently shared with me her smoothie recipe that not only keeps her going with a hectic schedule but has her looking fantastic! We met up at Toronto’s Green Juice Co. where we rolled up our sleeves to have our own smoothie party.
Do you have a smoothie every morning?
“I do. I travel so much and I don’t always get to eat all the fruit and vegetables I should.”
What do you add to your smoothie?
“My base is fresh kale and spinach which has lots of iron. Don’t feel like you need to add both. I just like the different texture they both create. I also like to add celery and cucumber. They are everybody’s friend as they are wonderful for reducing water retention. Here’s a tip for you: Don’t forget to use the celery leaves as well…they add a beautiful peppery taste.”
It seems like all of the ingredients in your recipe are readily available year-round.
“Yes, they have to be accessible. I can’t deal with making things with ingredients that aren’t available. That’s too exclusive and I don’t like exclusivity. I’m adding a local apple to this particular smoothie. I add an apple just for the sweetness.”
What would you add to to make it a little heartier? Perhaps to tide you over between meals.
“I love adding a banana and avocado with a touch of cinnamon and ginger, which is really nice. Cinnamon and ginger are both good for your digestive system. I’m also adding some lemon. I could talk day long about lemon. It’s the detoxifier and cleanser, the best thing for your skin.”
Being a Irish chef, you act as a bit of a food ambassador for the country. Is there anything people could be adding to their lives to bring them more culinary enjoyment?
“Yes, I think people could be baking bread more.”
You travel so much, besides the smoothie recipe, can you share your beauty routine?
“I love my beauty routine! I’m a big fan of face oils. I put it on during my flights, and its just incredibly hydrating. As well as the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I also make sure I exfoliate and use a hydrating mask at least once a week. The other thing is for my hands, because I cook so much they are constantly in water, which makes they dry. So one night every week I smother my hands with Vaseline and wear cotton gloves. It makes a big difference.”
