Here’s my confession: I get dandruff (sometimes). I’ve been bleaching my hair for about 10 years and all that wear and tear on my scalp can equal dryness and flaking, especially after I’ve freshened up my colour. But I always steered clear of dandruff shampoos as I was told that they were public enemy number one for fading hair dye. If you Google ‘will dandruff shampoo fade hair colour’ 147,000 results come up, including an entire Reddit thread dedicated to lightening too dark dye with dandruff shampoo. So that put me in a serious dilemma: How do I treat dandruff without using a dandruff shampoo?
Little did I know, I was about to come face-to-face with my fear when I received an invite to the launch of Head & Shoulders latest Instant Cooling Relief Shampoo. The invite was offering a wash and blow out at a swanky Yorkville salon, and while I was tempted by the chance to get a great blow out, my fear of having my delicately dyed tresses washed with Head & Shoulders was enough to keep me at home (especially since I had just shelled out a pretty penny to have my roots and colour touched up the week before). I decided to bite the bullet and tell the Head & Shoulders team about my concerns. I mentioned that I was happy to attend the event but was going to pass on the wash. However, they assured me that I could speak with P&G Beauty’s principal scientist, Rolanda Johnson-Wilkerson, about all of my concerns. When I sat down with her at the salon, she immediately put me at ease and was so excited to be able to bust the beauty myth that has haunted dandruff shampoos for years.
She went on to explain that fading happens because of copper in your shower water and actually has nothing to do with your shampoo. “Copper is introduced into the hair from our water and in excess it can oxidize and breakdown the proteins of our hair. So for someone who has bleached or coloured hair, it acts as a stimulant to change their hair colour,” said Johnson-Wilkerson. She promised me that if I wash, rinse, repeat with Head & Shoulders my colour will stay the same. Having chatted with her many times before and seeing she had a great head of hair herself, I knew she wouldn’t lead me astray. I sat down for the wash and blow dry and as soon as they pulled the towel off my head I breathed a giant sigh of relief. My icy silver colour was still perfectly intact and once my blow out was finished my hair felt super soft and healthy without using any other products. Colour me impressed.
After busting the dandruff shampoo myth, I now use Head & Shoulders once a week after I’ve had my colour touched up when my scalp is ultra-sensitive and dry thanks to the bleach and toner. It works like a charm, clearing up my flakes without altering my colour. I always pair it with my favourite hair mask, Phyto Phytokératine Extrême Exceptional Mask as that’s become my go-to deep conditioner to keep my strands silky.
The moral of this beauty story? Don’t be scared of dandruff shampoo! It can be your hair colour friend not foe. I promise.
