How I brought my hair colour back to life—without colouring it

Balayage is nothing new (some even argue that it’s on its way out), but for lazy, frugal girls like myself, it’s a hair colour saviour—until, of course, your hue starts to fade. I’m all about prolonging my colour as much as I can (and with my wedding coming up this summer, I’m getting super-strategic with timing my hair appointments), but those months in between appointments can be killer for someone like myself.

Let me back up for a sec.

Before my very first wade into the world of hair colour in 2007, I had dull, mousy brown hair that got natural highlights for approximately 30 seconds during our short-lived summer. I went super-dark for a while until I realized that my personality is more beach babe than goth—which is where balayage came in.

I’ve found that a lot of colour-protecting shampoos and conditioners will do what they promise, but not much else, like softening and smoothing out your hair. But what’s the point of having great colour if your tresses look like straw? Blondes are usually the ones who get all the fun when it comes to in-shower colour toning, but it’s about time brunettes got some of the love, too, which is why I was so excited for John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Shampoo and Conditioner.

I can now confidently say that I’m a colour shampoo-conditioner convert, even forgoing my professional hair products for this duo that not only make my hair hella soft and shiny, but offer a subtle brightening to my highlights, lowlights and natural brown (mousy) base.

While the concept of “lightening” my expensive balayage seemed terrifying at first, it’s made growing out my colour a breeze. After a couple of uses, the duo added a subtle golden lightness to my hair (thanks to the honey and marigold extract). It’s just enough to make my hair feel fresher, without altering the colour I had done eight months ago (yes, eight).

Much more budget-friendly than every-four-weeks colour appointments, no?
