How I Got DIY Pastel Pink Hair

It’s pretty simple: I’ve had an obsession with pastel hair for years. Luckily, since I’ve been bleaching my strands for about six years, (usually my hair is a shade of grey or silver), adding a bit of colour on my pre-lightened locks is super easy. Baby pink has always been one of my all-time fave colours and sometimes I get my hair dresser to use a pink or purple toner when I’m getting a root touch-up, but it only ever lasts 3 or 4 washes, tops. I live for all things pastel, so when model-of-the-moment Fernanda Ly was spotted on Louis Vuitton’s spring runway a few months ago with her candy pink unicorn mane I got a serious itch to go blush again.

That was in September and I still had on rose coloured glasses months later. I kept hearing that using Manic Panic was super easy, but I’ve never had the guts to take my hue into my own hands (until now!). I’m happy to report, it actually was super easy (and a success!). If you have pre-lightened hair, this is everything you need for a pastel My Little Pony mane.

  • Manic Panic Semi-Permanent Hair Color Cream in Cotton Candy Pink (or the colour of your choice)
  • John Frieda Miraculous Recovery Deep Conditioner (any white conditioner will work)
  • A mixing bowl
  • Gloves
  • A wide tooth comb

I knew I wanted a softer shade than the bold pink in the jar so I mixed the dye with conditioner to dilute it. I used about 5 parts conditioner to 1 part dye. Use your judgement, the colour in the bowl will be close to the colour on your hair. My hair was fairly clean (I had washed it the day before) so I just applied the mix directly onto my dry hair using gloves. Once my hair was loaded up and I had combed through it a few times to even out the coverage, I left it to work its magic for about an hour and a half before hopping in the shower.

Post blow dry, my hair was so soft after all the deep conditioning. I was aiming for more of a peachy-pink but it came out more lavender-pink because of all of the grey in my hair. I’m pleased with how the colour turned out, but I have no idea how long it will last. Fingers crossed for more than 3 washes! Now that I know how easy it is to achieve, maybe I will try something totally different in a few weeks.
