How I’m Making my Blonde Brighter Without Help from the Salon

I hate to break it to you, but it’s true: Blondes do have more fun. As a natural blonde (ish), I am always looking for ways to lighten my hair colour without spending my time and money at a salon. Now that the warm weather is here, I’ve been looking for a way to lighten my natural locks without hard work and the risk of damage.

When it comes to my hair, I’m a very low-maintenance, au naturel kind of girl. If you’re like me and aren’t ready to add “dyeing my hair” to your summer to-do list, here are the stress-free products I’m using that make my hairdresser wonder if I’m seeing someone else.

Product #1: John Frieda Go Blonder In-Shower Treatment

I’m not going to lie: When I first tried this, I was pretty nervous. Everything about the word “treatment” made the product sound really intense, and I was afraid of walking out of the shower looking like someone from the Great Sun-In Disaster of the ’90s—thank goodness I missed that fad. The treatment comes in two separate tubes, so the first time the product mixes is in the palms of your hands. After carefully reading the instructions three times (there was no way I was going to risk messing it up), I worked up the courage to apply it. I spent the recommended five minutes tapping my foot and checking the clock to make sure I didn’t go one second longer than I was supposed to, but you can probably just shave your legs or take a deep breathe or something. Finally my time was up, and as I stepped out of the shower I breathed a sigh of relief when I discovered my hair was still intact. Plus, when I walked into the Glow office the next day it all paid off because the consensus was that my strands were noticeably brighter, and I was on my way to a blonder summer.

Product #2: L’Oréal Casting Sunkiss Hair Lightener

Maybe it’s because I stopped caring, or officially think of myself as rebellious when it comes to my hair colour, but for some reason I wasn’t as nervous when I tried this product. My first impression? The smell is heavenly. The jelly is packed with camellia oil that promises to nourish and soften your hair, plus ylang ylang, which is what’s behind the yummy smell. Right after opening the bottle, I could not wait to try it. I quickly read the instructions on the box then tossed it away (because I’m a rebel, remember?) and proceeded to slather it all over my hair.

I really had a lot of fun with this product. My hair smelled amazing, and it was super soft after I washed it out. The lightening effect is a bit more gradual, so don’t expect to see instant results. But really, who cares? That just means you can enjoy the product more than once!

Product #3: John Frieda Go Blonder Lightening Shampoo & Conditioner

These products are not so much a trick I’m using to lighten my hair as an easy-peasy way to maintain my colour. They’re both peroxide-free (yay!) and instead use citrus and chamomile to brighten colour and lock in moisture. Switch out your regular shampoo and conditioner for these two, and your blonde will stay bright and fresh all summer long!
