How this texturizing spray changed my sad-looking ponytail

Dry texture spray isn’t new, but it seems like my inbox has been hit with a stream of press releases announcing tons of new versions lately. We are spoiled for choice when it comes to texture spray, and if—like me—you want to channel a disheveled Daria in her latest Céline campaign: Get. On. It.

I like to think of texture spray as filling the void between dry shampoo and hairspray. It gives hair a superfine grittiness that adds volume and movement, while disguising dirt. But unlike dry shampoo, texture spray won’t leave visible residue. There are hybrid products that act like dry shampoo if you need to soak up oil, but also add volume and hold. Enter Sally Hershberger’s Caffeine Volume 3-in-1 spray. It’s not new, but it’s affordable and an all-in-one, which makes it travel-friendly.

When my ponytail is looking a little sad, I spritz this stuff all over and it helps my hair look thicker. To start, I flip my head upside down while grabbing large sections and spraying between strands. I like to twist strands and scrunch my hair while dry – a look that works best if I’ve already used a large barrel to curl my hair.

The best part? You can sleep on it and second day hair won’t flake with residue. I find this product “plays well with others” – meaning it doesn’t change consistencies if I layer it with my usual hairspray. While I live and die by dry shampoo (check my post about it here), if I already have product in my hair sometimes the dry shampoo won’t absorb as well or it leaves flakes that take precious minutes to brush out. Totally defeating the purpose of a quick fix, am I right? On low maintenance hair days, which are most, this texture spray is my one-stop-shop.
