Five things I learned backstage at Fashion Week

No matter how many seasons of fashion week come and go, you always learn something new when it comes to backstage beauty tips and tricks. I’ve hand picked the most surprising and coolest beauty hacks from backstage backstage beauty tips from WMCFW.

Tania's Tip - Tania + Grace

Coconut oil to the rescue (again)
I can’t be the only person who struggles with fully removing ultra long-lasting lip stains so I cornered Grace Lee, lead Canadian makeup artist for Maybelline in between shows and asked her what I should be using to properly remove mine (I was wearing Maybelline New York Colour Blur by Lipstudio in Fast & Fuchsia). After she listened to my rant about makeup remover not working for me because of the aftertaste her solution was something oil-based. Coconut oil here I come!

Mishal's Tip - Hayley

Black eyeliner can be boring
When I first saw the rainbow bright eyeliner at Hayley Elsaesser (an eye-popping combo of yellow, pink, lime green and turquoise), it was equivalent of coming across an ice cream truck—instant happiness. But my first question to makeup artist Grace Lee was, ‘How would you make something like this work in real life?’ Obviously this isn’t a 9-5 eyeliner and not really every day-appropriate, she told me. But you can still raise your liner game without going all out. She recommends choosing a coloured liner and using it at the tail end of your cat eye, or creating a double-winged liner like the one she created for model Gigi Hadid by combining your go-to black with a fun colour. Sold.

Nicole's Tip - Sid

Eyeshadow Isn’t Just for Your Lids
Watching the pros work backstage makes it impossible to get stuck in a beauty rut. Grace Lee and her team are constantly coming up with inventive ways to use existing products, and I was taking serious mental notes. One trick I’m definitely trying ASAP? Applying cream eyeshadow as a highlighter (on my cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow). Lee used Maybelline New York’s Color Tattoo 24 Hour Cream Gel Eyeshadow in Barely Branded to create a pretty, frosted face for the Sid Neigum show, and the effect was subtly luminous and beautiful.

Emily's Tip - Matthew

You can use Babylips for actually everything
Grace Lee is always singing the praises of Maybelline’s little lip balm that could but this season she took Babylips’ functionality to a whole new level. To complete the look for Matthew Gallagher’s spring show, Lee added a light coat of the lip balm over top of rose gold shadow on models’ lids to secure pink glitter onto their eyes (!). The result was sparkly, starry-eyed gorgeousness (there were audible oohs and ahhs backstage). This is one hack I will definitely be test-driving.

Alyssa's Tip - Rita

The Need-to-Know-Now Nail Hack
At WMCFW, I was lucky enough to grab some time with Essie Canada’s Lead Artist Rita Remark and together we recreated the negative space nail look from Matthew Gallagher’s runway show. For nail art, to get such precise and defined lines, cleaning up is key. I learned how you can actually use an angled eyeliner brush dipped in a little bit of acetone to sharpen the lines in your nail art (genius).
