Purple has always been my favourite colour, so I’m ecstatic when I see celebs rocking purple makeup. It’s a great alternative to the nude palettes we see every day, and with summer around the corner, why not add some colour to your primping sesh?
I was perusing pics of celebrities at the MET Gala from previous years when I came across a shot of Joan Smalls in 2014 with the most beautiful electric violet lips I’d ever seen. I know lately there have been lots of different purple lipsticks popping up in beauty aisles but I really fell in love with this colour and I couldn’t find it anywhere. With a little more digging I found out that Joan Smalls’ makeup artist used navy eyeliner (say what?) with pink magenta lipstick to create that vibrant violet. When I found this out I knew I had to give it a try, as it might be the secret to getting the purple lip shade of my dreams.
What you need:
Navy eyeliner: I used Yves Saint Laurent’s 3-in-1 Khol Eyeliner in Cobalt
Magenta lipstick: I used Smashbox’s Be Legendary Lipstick in Tabloid
Step 1: Apply the eyeliner all over your lips. You can use as much as you want depending on how dark you want the violet to turn out. I made sure to use a creamier eyeliner stick instead of a harsh pencil liner so it’s easier to apply. I know it looks scary but don’t worry, it’ll be over soon!
Step 2: Apply the magenta lipstick directly on top of the eyeliner, making sure to cover all of the blue liner. You can use the lipstick straight out of the tube or use a lip brush for more precision.
Step 3: Now just press your lips together and shimmy them around to blend the colour. Presto! You’ve got an amazing shade of violet on your lips without having to buy another lipstick.
