Beauty Test Lab: CoverGirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick

Arm swatches are so yesterday. Here at the Glo-ffice, we like to try our products by wearing them how they’re intended to be worn. So, in our first-ever beauty test lab, we decided to give Katy Perry’s CoverGirl lipstick collab a whirl. We divvied up 11 shades between four staffers so you get an idea of how these shades work IRL on different skin tones.

The PR pitch: A demi-matte range of 11 bold lipsticks that are more soft and velvety than flat and dry.

The tester: Emily MacCulloch
The shade: Magenta Minx
The lowdown: This super-pigmented fuchsia has serious staying power. It didn’t budge during lunch hour (even after eating a messy sandwich) and the bright pink is vibrant without being OTT, so it’s totally wearable for day.

The tester: Emily MacCulloch
The shade: Pink Paws
The lowdown: This is not a colour I would normally reach for (I usually go for nudes or brights) but this soft pink is actually super pretty. It adds just enough colour without looking chalky and is versatile—I could wear it with a smoky eye, cat eye or no makeup.

The tester: Emily MacCulloch
The shade: Sphynx
The lowdown: This is one of my fave nude lipsticks. It has just enough pink and just enough brown and unlike most nudes it works with minimal makeup. I just have to remember to swipe on a little blush to avoid looking washed out.

The tester: Nicole Keen
The shade: Crimson Cat
The lowdown: I take my red lipsticks very seriously, and this one could be a new contender for fave shade. It also lasted for hours and turned into a pretty stain as it wore off.

The tester: Nicole Keen
The shade: Kitty Purry
The lowdown: This mauve-meets-nude shade is definitely outside of my comfort zone, but I liked it. It’s very creamy and not super-matte, which makes it easier to wear.

The tester: Nicole Keen
The shade: Cat Call
The lowdown: I like how versatile this pretty pink shade is. It’s bold enough for a night on the town, but still works for daytime.

The tester: Tania Kwong
The shade: Coral Cat
The lowdown: I was amazed at how bright and uplifting this shade was when I put it on, for my mood and complexion. It would be perfect for days when I need a little extra spring in my step.

The tester: Tania Kwong
The shade: Maroon Meow
The lowdown: I usually avoid super dark lipsticks because they have a stamp-like effect on my face. While I liked the edge this shade gave me, it’s definitely not an everyday shade. It’s perfect for a night out with girlfriends.

The tester: Shania Lane
The shade: Cosmo Kitty
The lowdown: This is such a perfect purple. When I look at this colour I think summer concerts.

The tester: Shania Lane
The shade: Perry Panther
The lowdown: I’ve had only bad experiences with black lipstick—until now. There were no harsh lines or flaking as the formula is really creamy. I’d pair this with a smoky eye for a super moody night out look.

The tester: Shania Lane
The shade: Catoure
The lowdown: On me this is like a really great everyday natural tone. It easily completes my “no makeup” makeup look by adding fullness and moisture without too much pop. Plus it kept my lips soft all day.
