The Best Matte Lipsticks That Won’t Dry Out Your Lips

Matte lipsticks have come a long way in the past couple of years. The old formulas I remember made my lips feel like sandpaper—needless to say I wasn’t really a fan. But that has changed…BIG TIME. Now these five matte lipsticks are on heavy rotation, especially during the summer months. They don’t suck the moisture out of my lips, and I find they last longer than shiny lippies. Not only that, but they don’t slide around as much (I’ve never had a matte lipstick end up on my front teeth). Last but not least, the colours are super saturated and bright just the way I like them!

Here are my current (non-drying) faves:

L’Oréal Paris Le Matte Velvety Full Coverage Lip Colour in Matte-r of Fact

This easy-to-use lip crayon definitely delivers the velvety finish promised by the packaging, and it’s a beautiful deep pink that’s a bit dramatic for daytime (which I love). Bonus: It’s retractable, and you never have to sharpen it.

Maybelline New York Colorblur by Lipstudio Cream Matte Pencil in Orange Ya Glad

Speaking of lip crayons, I’m obsessed with this one. Not a week goes by that I don’t use it (or one of the other two shades I have in my kit). Even in a hurry, it’s easy to apply precisely, and it feels so nice and creamy on my lips. I love the versatility of using it straight-up out of the tube for bright colour (my preference) or slightly smudged for a subtle stained effect (the built-in smudger makes this a breeze to achieve).

Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Audacious

This lipstick and I go way back. I remember seeing Zooey Deschanel wearing it on the cover of Lucky Magazine (RIP), and I immediately went to Shoppers Drug Mart to snag it. True story. It’s the perfect light orange-meets-peachy-coral shade, and the texture is pleasantly buttery. It’s so moisturizing that it almost feels like a lip balm—hence the name.

Vasanti Love Brights Gel Matte Lipstick in Destined for Love

Every summer I rekindle my romance with this shade. If I could have created my ideal pinky coral hue, this would be it. It glides on easily thanks to its gel formula, and the extra-pointy tip makes negotiating my cupid’s bow a breeze. Plus, it has the prettiest fruity floral scent. Basically, applying this lipstick is a fab sensorial experience.

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Magenta Matte

When I pull out my paisley shift dress and round sunnies, this lipstick is the ultimate finishing touch for a mod-inspired look. It’s an eye-catching hot pink that really needs no other accompaniment, so I keep the rest of my face clean and let my lips do the talking.
