How I Got A Winning Oscar Beauty Look

My favourite time of year is almost upon us: Oscar night. While the entire awards season is exciting, the Academy Awards is the Superbowl of red carpet beauty and fashion. There’s something special about seeing Hollywood’s A-list decked out in exquisite custom-made designer gowns with their hair and makeup done up to the nines. While all eyes are on who’s wearing what, it’s the combination of beauty and fashion that truly make an Oscar look memorable. And maybe it’s just me but I’m always looking for those ladies who break the dewy skin, neutral makeup mould and go for something just a little left of centre. I mean, Oscar night is the night to turn the glam dial up to 11, why play it safe? I’ve scanned the archives (yup, I went way back) and picked a few of my all time fave Oscar beauty looks and outlined the key makeup you need to do a DIY version at home.

Gwyneth Paltrow (2002)

While most people hold Paltrow’s prim and pretty Shakespeare in Love look as their most memorable (remember her sleek bun and pepto pink Ralph Lauren), her totally unGoop-like smoky eye and Alexander McQueen frock from 2002 are way more my jam. Unfortunately not many agree with me (including Gwyneth herself!) but this moody eye and braided ‘do stood out on the red carpet. IMO Gwyneth has never looked edgier. This look is all about the grey smoky effect so grab a palette that contains a few different textures (matte, satin and metallic) for a multidimensional eye. Complete the look with a bit of light contouring and a neutral pink lip gloss.

Michelle Williams (2007)

If you’re going to rock colour during awards season, this is the way to do it. Williams decided to play up her canary yellow Vera Wang gown with a brick red lip and the results were swoon-worthy. This sounds crazy but this is like, the only red lip I remember in all the red lips that have existed on the Oscar red carpet. While most would shy away from colour when donning a vibrant dress, the crimson and yellow combo compliment each other without looking OTT. To recreate this look, it’s all about choosing the right red. Go for a creamy lipstick (nothing too matte) that has a cooler undertone and don’t forget to use a lip pencil so you get a clean line. Finish with multiple coats of a volumizing mascara.

Olivia Wilde (2014)

attends the Oscars held at Hollywood & Highland Center on March 2, 2014 in Hollywood, California.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for a good cat eye and this winged liner is the flick to end all flicks. I remember Wilde’s look so clearly because every other actress favoured neutral tones that left me yawning. This is the only makeup I remember from that night and it’s one for the books. The ’60s inspired look complimented her black Valentino perfectly and I’ve pretty much been trying to recreate those wings ever since. To get her eye look, I went with an easy to use liquid liner that paints a bold line but also has a fine tip for ultimate precision. Next, swipe a dewy highlighting stick over the bridge of your nose and cheekbones then finish off with a peach hued lipstick.
