Everything You Need to Rock a Bright Lip This Summer

Summer means a lot of things to me when it comes to beauty: an extra layer of SPF, minimal foundation and, of course, bright lips. While I tend to go lighter in almost every area of my beauty routine, summer is usually the time when I like to add a touch of colour to my normally bare lips. But it’s not always great for the skin on your lips. To help rock a bold lip, here are some must-have lip products.

Every bright, bold or matte look starts with a good lip treatment. While it’s not as easy to remember to work it into your regular routine as a face mask or hair treatment, if  you’re constantly reaching for a bright matte lip, this step should definitely be in your beauty regimen. You might prefer a regular run-of-the-mill scrub (which you can totally DIY at home using sugar, salt or even coffee grounds), but there are also pout-specific masks like this.

The next step is hydration. Most lipsticks these days (even matte ones) have a decent amount of hydration, but I find I always need a little more. So no colour touches my lips before a swipe of balm, and you can usually find at least one flavour of Burt’s Bees Moisturizing Lip Balm rolling around in the bottom of my purse.

Another beauty staple for your colourful lips? Smashbox Always Sharp Clear Lip Liner. Coloured lip liners are great (and this one has a creamy, easy-to-blend formula available in 15 shades), but clear liner makes it easy to swap through your lipstick rotation and keeps your colour in place (especially if you have a hard time staying in the lines, like I do).

Finally, we can talk colour.

While I often gravitate towards the same lip shades, I also get bored really easily, so I bring a few options with me everywhere I go. Two new faves that have made it into the rotation: Revlon Ultra HD Lip Lacquer in Pink Amethyst and CoverGirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Coral Cat. While I normally prefer lipstick to gloss, Revlon’s newest lip addition is velvety instead of sticky and allows for easy application and a generous dose of colour. Katy Perry’s new lippies, on the other hand, are creamy and hydrating but deliver some serious colour payout with a matte finish. Plus, this shade satisfies my coral-loving heart.
