I’ve found the perfect beauty trick for making my teeth look instantly whiter, and it doesn’t involve spending time and money on whitening strips or even a trip to the dentist! It turns out that you have to be a little strategic with the shade of lipstick you choose—picking the first red lipstick off the shelf just isn’t going to cut it.
According to science, the key to whitening your teeth is finding a lip shade with a blue undertone and avoiding anything that has a hint of orange in it. If you throw it back to that elementary school lesson on the colour wheel, you’ll remember that blue and purple are complementary to yellow. When it comes to lipstick, that blue undertone will actually cancel out the yellow in your smile, leaving it pearly white!
I find the best way to tell if a lip shade has a blue undertone is by applying the colour to a small section of my wrist area. If the colour looks warm, it typically has an orange undertone, and if the colour looks cool, it has a blue undertone.
If you are looking for a red lipstick with a blue undertone, Red Door Red by Elizabeth Arden is stunning. The colour is so vibrant that it really makes those pearly whites pop.
Want a fun and flashy pink for summer? Lise Watier has a great selection of colours. My personal favourite is the Liz in the Rouge Fondant Suprême collection.
For a more neutral lipstick, Kitty Purry from Covergirl’s Katy Perry line is beautiful. This lipstick has a cooler undertone and is natural-looking.
To illuminate that gorgeous grin, it’s all about the shade of lipstick that you choose. Stick to cooler blue undertones and deep berry shades. Try to avoid anything with orange undertones and browns. I’ve mentioned just a few of my favourites but test some shades, find some of your favourites and you’ll have all of your girlfriends asking what your secret is!
