My secret weapon for big bold lashes

My desert island product would be mascara, no doubt about it.I love big bold lashes. I have a three-coat minimum no matter where I’m going so you can imagine how much of this stuff I go through. The eyes are my favourite facial feature so I do my best to make them pop.

Before I knew labels and brands, the shape and colour of the tube was how I knew which mascara to buy. When I found a mascara I liked, I would bring the tube back to the drug store, find the exact same one and buy it again. Looking back on my purchases, I noticed something now that I hadn’t before: I have always been a fan of Maybelline’s Great Lash mascara.

In fact, it was my first mascara (I remember the bright green and pink tube). Great Lash mascara has been around for more than a decade. Over time Maybelline has created different versions, but always stayed true to their pink and green heritage. Waterproof, smudge proof and anniversary additions helped keep the brand current but time-tested customers like me know the original formula is the way to go.

Why do I love it? Simplicity. The brush is short and straight, no added curve or spike to stab you in the eye with if you don’t know how to use it. The applicator never comes out clumpy and the consistency is always the same even if you’re guilty of leaving the brush out overnight.

Starting from my waterline at the outer corner of my eye, I stroke my lashes three times on each side to get the bold volume I love. The brush grabs each individual lash to achieve that full-fan effect. The best part is that the more you apply, the longer your lashes get but they don’t stick together.

The only down side to the original formula is that it tends to run when your eyes get watery. I switch to the waterproof version on windy winter afternoons to keep everything in place.
