My Tried and True Waterproof Makeup

Summer is upon us, and in gorgeous hot weather the beach is always calling. Since I am one of those girls who doesn’t leave the house without makeup, even a day at the beach requires just the right products. All of these stellar makeup items are easy to apply, plus they’re waterproof or long-lasting. I have the proof!

To start, I always apply sunscreen to keep skin safe from harmful UVA/UVB rays. My favourite is La Roche Posay Ultra-fluid Lotion SPF 60, because it is light and not greasy. Over that I apply a tiny amount of Benefit Porefessional primer to my T-zone to fill in my pores, mattify my makeup and make it last longer. Then I apply the star product of my face routine: Estée Lauder Double Wear Light Stay-in-Place Makeup. It has sheer to medium 15-hour coverage, a natural finish and it doesn’t dry out my skin. Under my eyes I use just enough Estée Lauder DW All Day Extreme Wear concealer to cover my dark circles, and set that with a small amount of translucent powder. To give my face a little healthy glow, I apply Bourjois Bronzing primer to my forehead and cheeks and Smashbox L.A. Lights Lip and Cheek Color in Laurel Canyon Coral. Now for the best part: Highlighter! I generously apply Pür Cosmetics Sun-Kissed Glow Strobe/Highlighting palette to the tops of my cheekbones, the bridge of my nose and my cupid’s bow until I feel like a glowing goddess.

I used my fingers for easy application, but you can also use brushes. I chose mostly cream products for this look because they resist water better than powder makeups do. But if you have oily skin, feel free to apply powder over these products where you need it.

For my eyebrows, I kept it simple with Annabelle Waterproof Skinny Brow Liner in Universal Taupe, just to fill them in and define them softly. On my eyes, I used an incredible product by Lancôme, the Ombre Hypnose Stylo in 18 Pepite Amazone, a perfect summer bronze shade. This cream eyeshadow pencil is easy to use, and it sets to a budge-proof waterproof finish. Make sure to blend it product quickly with your fingers or a synthetic brush, because once it has set it’s not moving! I pressed a small amount of Lancôme Color Design eyeshadow in Burnt Sand over the cream shadow for a little more shimmer, and lined my eyes with Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Khol Liner in Penny Lane. To keep my eyes soft, I first used Benefit’s They’re Real Tinted Lash Primer to slightly darken my lashes and then applied Clarins Double Fix Mascara. This is a waterproof topcoat for lashes and eyebrow groomer in one, a perfect multi-use product.

A nude-pink lipgloss would finish this look nicely, but I’m more of a glam girl so I decided to go for something brighter. I primed my lips with Clarins Instant Light Lip Base to keep them hydrated and make my lipstick last longer. Then I applied Stila Stay-All-Day Liquid Lipstick in Venezia, the perfect coral-orange-red colour.

I wore this makeup out and about all day while I ran errands in the hot sun, but to prove its true resistance, I knew I had to go big or go home. So I dumped a big pot of water on my head à la Ice Bucket Challenge, and it held up!

I went out to meet a friend directly after my experiment, and she complimented me on my makeup. She couldn’t believe it when I told her that I had dumped water all over my face just before meeting her. This look is perfect beachside glam—and it passed all my tests with flying colours.
