When my co-worker asked me to choose a new Maybelline lipstick to try, I instinctively went for Vibrant Violet. As a child, I remember watching my mom sitting at her vanity table and finishing her makeup routine with a swipe of purple lipstick. I thought your lips should only be red so I secretly vowed to never wear purple lipstick when I grew up. Years later, having tried all the hues of orange, red and pink lipsticks, I’ve naturally embraced purple as my signature colour. I guess in the end, we do end up turning into our mothers in one way or another!
Here are the three purple lipsticks that are currently on rotation in my makeup bag:
1. Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Mattes in Vibrant Violet. I’m always wary of matte lipsticks because I have naturally chapped lips. This is different though. It goes on creamy and doesn’t dry out my lips. I usually wear this on the weekend when I am just out for a couple of hours having brunch and running errands.
2. Urban Decay Revolution High-Color Lipgloss in Vice gives me shiny lips whereas the other two give me matte lips. If you look closely at the packaging, there are sparkles in the gloss. It goes on thick and is very pigmented in colour. I like using it if I’m going out at night to elevate my look, and I layer it on top of my matte lipsticks to give them a boost.
3. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Como literally stays all day. This is my go-to during the week because I apply it in the morning before work and I still have lipstick on while I’m at an evening event. Sometimes when I get it on my fingers, I have to give it a good scrub to get the colour off. Here’s a tip: always wipe the excess lipstick off the wand before putting it on and build the colour up gradually or it’ll turn into a vibrant mess. I don’t like applying a second coat later on in the evening because I find that there’s too much product buildup and I can’t get a smooth finish.
