Lately there has been a laser focus on liquid lipsticks all over Instagram. Most brands are responding by either creating their own lines of liquid lipstick colours (Kylie Jenner anyone?) or re-marketing the ones they already have with this newfound “Insta-fame.”
Recently the emphasis has been on matte lippies, and liquid lipsticks deliver on that and much more. The only downside is when you’re eating or drinking—it can wear off and retouching can be messy, so you often have to take it off and reapply it. The super matte formulas can also dry out your lips if you’re not prepping them properly or hydrating them after wearing lipstick all day. They are perfect for work if you just want a little colour and nothing too intense for daytime or you can build them up for more drama.
Mostly, I love them because they come in beautiful colours so they can fit whatever your mood is and any makeup look you’re trying to achieve. Also, they’re opaque and richly textured, so a little goes a long way and you can achieve flawless application without a lip liner. Here are some of my current must-haves.
Why I Love Stila
What I loved about these Stila liquid lipsticks was their colour payoff. I didn’t need to re-dip the brush, which was a felt tip sponge that moved effortlessly and allowed me to control where the product was going with ease. Not only did I find it super easy to apply, but it also had a sweet smell. It lasted all day until I ate, but with a little touch-up, it was perfect, because the formula is so hydrating and creamy it didn’t cake up.

Why I Love Maybelline
Maybelline Vivid Matte liquid lipsticks were also fun to wear. The formula is a little more semi-matte, unlike the Stilas, which dried to a matte finish right away. The colour payoff is between opaque and sheer. I had to layer it a couple of times in order to get the colour intensity you see pictured. They have a pleasant floral scent and gave me a slight tingling sensation, almost like a lip plumper, which I liked. I also love the deep purple shade called Possessed Plum; dark lips are trending right now!

Why I Love Joe Fresh
This formula is not a matte liquid lipstick, but more of a long-wearing lipgloss. It has a sheer, soft colour, which is great for spring and summer, and a sugar cookie scent. The gloss is a little sticky, but that likely makes it last longer than a buttery gloss that will be gone in 30 minutes. It won’t hold up as long as its matte liquid lipstick counterparts, but it too delivers a tingling sensation. Because my skin is medium to dark, I like a little more colour payoff from my lip colours, so I would probably layer a lipstick under the Joe Fresh Long Wear Lip Veil in order to pack a little more punch.
