Taking a quick snap backstage at the Alice & Olivia show with Stila’s Global Makeup Artist Sarah Lucero
I was lucky enough to attend New York Fashion Week (!) a few weeks ago, ticking off a major box on my bucket list as I’ve dreamed of going as long as I can remember. Being a makeup junkie and bringing only a tiny wee suitcase, I immediately thought, “Ummm, what do I pack?!” I combed through my stacks of makeup and picked out the absolute essentials I would need for my NYFW adventure. With limited space I knew there was only room for my tried-and-true favourites and that I’d have to leave my usual bags (and bags) of lipstick and eyeshadow behind. What makeup do you need to survive fashion week? It’s simple. Here are the key must-haves that pack a big punch, so you’re ready to tackle any beauty emergency that pops up (and will get you looking A+ should you happen to grab a selfie with Karlie or Gigi).
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner
If you have mad love for cat eyes (like I do), you. need. this. liner. One of the easiest pens to use, you will never find me without it. So much so that I was able to use it whilst in a moving taxi going from one show to the next (seriously, this little baby is that good). It also takes up almost virtually no space in your bag so you can toss it in your purse, giving you the power to amp up your look anytime, anywhere.
Lancôme Grandiôse Mascara
So while this tube is a little bit bigger than what I would normally throw in my purse, this magic wand is totally worth it. I know mascara is a no-brainer but I think sometimes people forget how a few extra coats of the good stuff can totally transform your look. While one coat will give you a subtle, fluttery fringe, add 2-3 more coats and you’ll get more dramatic ’60s-esque lashes. Just pair with a nude gloss and you’ll suddenly be channelling Brigitte Bardot.
Is there anything this multitasker can’t do? Apply it on cheekbones, mix it into your foundation or use it as a highlighter on your eyes, this go-to does it all (and then some). After a long day of running around the city, by about 3:00 my face needs a heaping dose of glow. A few swipes from this stick on the tops of your cheekbones, brow bones, bridge of the nose and cupid’s bow and I look fresh-faced again. Available in a wide range of hues, you’re guaranteed to find one that works with your skin tone.
Maybelline Colorsensational Creamy Matte Lip Color in Vibrant Violet
Obvious beauty lesson alert: a lip is the quickest and easiest way to transform your face. And while yes, red lips are classic and they’re always a good choice, sometimes you just want something with a bit more….oomph. I adore the collection of matte lipsticks that Maybelline has done because no matter how busy I am (or how much coffee I drink/food I eat) these lippies don’t budge. While all the colours are swoon-worthy (hello, hot pink), this purple hue is sure to stand out in a crowd.
