Working on a photo shoot is all about the little things. And no one knows that better than makeup artist Erin Heather, whose client list includes names such as Louis Vuitton and Joe Fresh. She has tons of tricks to get a camera-ready look. She gave me a few tips while on the set of a fashion shoot to help me get that beautiful model glow.
Serums are your best friend
Heather spritzes models’ skin with mineral water and then massages in Clarins HydraQuench Serum. Why? Because it gives them a soft, healthy-looking complexion without weighing the face down with excess moisture. I used a cotton ball to dap the serum on my face and neck and the blue concoction immediately absorbed into my skin. I liked that it didn’t feel overly greasy when applying and only needed a pump or two for my entire face.
Blot out oil & shine
Her cardinal rule for shiny skin, blotting sheets: “Before you apply more powder, blot first! This is crucial to avoid that cakey look.” I’m guilty of caking on the powder whenever my forehead gets shiny so I’m happy to find something to take away the oil without smudging my foundation and clogging my pores.
The right foundation is key
When foundation is necessary, CoverGirl cream foundations are a great choice because they come in a wide variety of skin tones and are ideal for sensitive skin. Its water-based formula lets the skin breathe and blends with your natural skin tone. I used CoverGirl Clean Liquid Makeup for a week and the results were unreal. The foundation easily covered my problem areas and even blemishes. But Heather was quick to remind me, “you can use all the foundation, concealer and highlighter in the world, but if you’re not working with healthy, balanced skin, you will not achieve a flawless look.”
Add a touch of lip colour
Heather loves Stila Convertible Colour, a dual lipstick and cheek cream. Her favourite? Peony. “[It’s] a pretty persimmon shade that looks amazing on everyone!” Stila Convertibles are not only pretty, they’re also practical. It’s one of the only lip creams I can wear without developing annoying little pimples from overuse and can withstand my longest coffee-induced day.
