Trend on Trial: Black Lipstick

It’s official: black lipstick is trending. Not just for goths anymore, moody pouts have been gaining momentum over the last two seasons, starting at Giles’ fall show then blowing up the spring runways at Dior, Marc Jacobs and Fenty x Puma (to name a few). The trend showed no signs of slowing down at Toronto Fashion Week (TFW) with dramatic lipsticks turning heads at Ellie Mae, Stephan Caras and Rudsak.

[Where it all began: the dark lip look at Giles’ Fall/Winter show]

But my favourite dark pout from TFW goes to Mackage, where a glossy black lip offset white eyebrows. The look was totally striking and convinced me that I need to try the black lip trend stat. The only thing stopping me? The black lipstick used at that show (Maybelline Color Sensational Loaded Bolds in Pitch Black) isn’t launching until July. Since using that lipstick isn’t an option, I’m moving forward with plan B: eyeliner.

I know it might sound a little scary, but I figure it’s the next best thing to black lipstick, plus the super-precise point of the eyeliner will give me a smooth, crisp line.  To get Mackage’s tar lip, Grace Lee, lead makeup artist for Maybelline New York Canada, first lined and filled models’ lips in with Eye Studio Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil in Black, so I reached for that first. Then I swapped out Pitch Black for Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid in Possessed Plum. While this won’t give me the same super-glossy finish, the liquid lipstick layered over top will give the black a bit of dimension. Plus, the demi-matte finish will have more staying power (glossy looks great for runway and photos but is hard to maintain IRL).

The result: I’m kind of digging going over to the dark side. While I won’t be donning it everyday, I could definitely rock this on a night out. The whole look is surprisingly simple, with the eyeliner applying so smoothly, it made lining my lips really easy. The key to making the look more edgy chic and less Marilyn Manson? Pair it with a swipe of rosy blush and a coat of mascara and nothing else. Tip: I used a lip primer before the eyeliner to help it glide on a little smoother and to add a dose of hydration. So what do you think? Are you going to give this daring trend a try?
