What’s the deal with strobing?

So I’ve mastered contouring….or not. I have no shame in admitting that despite trying out the trend using premium kits, watching tutorials and approaching the task with a sense of play, I still don’t feel confident and, hey, maybe it’s not for me. Given that I have a narrow face and a rather Aquiline nose, I don’t want to make my features appear any slimmer and it’s too easy to end up with cheeks that just look dirty when contouring goes wrong.

Enter strobing, which is the new name for what was previously known as highlighting, and guess what; it’s much harder to mess up!

The key here is using a highlighter that has shimmer for a dewy effect and applying to the areas of my face where light naturally hits for an all-over brightness, as opposed to the shaping shadow-and-light effect used in contouring.

NYX’s foolproof Strobe of Genius Illuminating Palette is just what the doctor ordered. It comes with 7 shades that vary from a canary-yellow-gold to a pretty lilac and a delicious champagne, my fave, that all go on with a light touch.

After I’m done applying my face makeup, I sweep the lightest shade on my cheekbones, roughen following an invisible line from the end of my eyebrow towards the middle of my eye. Next, a very light tracing down the bridge of my nose and a little puff on the tip and then my Cupid’s bow gets a dappling of the the shimmery stuff. I’m happy to report that the powder doesn’t come out in large glittery chunks, which is too often the case with highlighters, and instantly makes my face look a little more awake.

The colours are also highly buildable and when I layer the slightly darker shade for maximum effect, there’s a noticeable intensity but I don’t feel clownish, putting my initial fear of looking like a disco ball to rest.

If I don’t have time for the whole multi-colour kit thing, the double-ended chubby pen known as the Wonder Stick in the Universal shade, is a quick option that delivers. The highlighter end is ideal for precise and quick application on the cheeks and definitely does the trick with a few easy swipes. The key, as always, for a properly dewy look: blend, blend, blend.
