Why I hopped on the dark lip bandwagon

How much do I love black cherry lipsticks? Let me count the ways. Since dark lips hit the scene years ago it’s always been a beauty trend that was super-intimidating to me. And I’m a girl who will try almost anything when it comes to makeup (sequins on your eyes? Yup, I’ve tried it). But when raisin-hued pouts were spotted all over the fall runways (think Nancy from The Craft), at shows like Emanuel Ungaro and Giles, I knew I was ready to take the plunge.

The #1 tip for selecting a next-to-black lipstick? Finish is everything, so avoid gloss at all costs. It’s messy and within 10 minutes it will probably be all over your face (mine lasted three minutes before moving onto my front teeth). So the matte-r the better. When I began my search, I immediately thought Urban Decay would be the ticket and lo and behold, their new Matte Revolution line had just the colour: Blackmail. It’s deep, sexy and surprisingly easy to apply thanks to its ultra-smooth texture. Swipe it on straight out of the tube, pair with a matching lip liner or buff it out with your finger (my personal fave) for a just-kissed effect. Either way it’s impossible not to feel like a film noir femme fatale when you’ve got it on.
