Yes, Jennifer Lopez’s makeup always looks on point, but can we please talk about her nails for a second? They’re never not as glam as the rest of her beauty look. When I got the chance to meet Tom Bachik, celeb manicurist and the man responsible for JLo’s tips, I had a gazillion questions about what’s it like working with the star. In town to talk about L’Oréal Paris’s newest nail polish collection, Le Vernis À L’Huile (out mid-June), he dished on everything from her favourite colours to how she plans her beauty looks around her nails. I was so inspired by our gab session that I was decided to break out of my usual nude mani routine (when I’m not getting my nails done by a pro, I almost never opt bright colours). But first, here’s what Bachik had to tell me about her.
Her favourite polish shades are pink and nude.
“She loves bright pinks. Or, a clean, kind of tan full coverage nude.”
She likes her nudes with a bit of bling.
Her nails at the AMAs: “She literally had 11 outfit changes and it had to be something that went with everything, so we went with the sheer nude that softened the look. And then we went with the ballet slipper or the coffin shape and then it was like, but it’s Jennifer, it needs a little bit of bling, so just the simple one stone at the tip, just to give it something. I also had a couple of options where we could do stones down the center or things like that, a full stone nail just to change things up, but kept it very clean.”
She matches her lips to her tips.
“We’ll do a green sparkly eye and green sparkle on the nails. Many times, they’re like, I’m feeling like a bright blue, or I need fuchsia on my nails. J. Lo calls it “hunty pink”—going on the hunt—like that bright fuchsia, Barbie pink. So, she wants that and she’s like—make the lip match. Sometimes, literally, the makeup will get played off of the nail.”
What Would JLo Do?
Testing out Le Vernis À L’Huile, I dialed it up a notch with a bright pink shade called Nymphea (out later this year) instead of going my usual soft shade route. The colour is super-saturated so one coat will suffice. But I went for two coats along with a top coat for an extra hit of shine. Would this qualify as what JLo refers to as “hunty pink”? I’m going to go with yes.
