How I learned to embrace sugar

I don’t know about you, but lately my social feeds have been blowing up with chatter about our nation’s predicted “death by sugar” since a very damning report revealed that we consume WAY too much of the stuff.

Yes, it seems we can’t help ourselves and while it’s pretty clear that the sweet stuff isn’t our friend, the opposite is true when it comes to beauty products, which is great news. This is where sugar can really shine, acting as exfoliator, humectant (fancy word for moisturizer) and even anti-aging element.

I’m happy that I don’t have to completely turn my back on the saccharine things in life and instead can harness the power of sugar for good!

Burt’s Bees Cranberry & Pomegranate Sugar Scrub uses sucrose grains to slough off dead skin and the powerfully potent scent nearly tricks my nose into thinking the jam-looking product is actually edible. (I resist the urge to test that theory.) Cake Beauty’s Sugar Infused Texturing Beach Spray flips the script and makes the sweet stuff the star, adding only a pinch of salt, so my second-day hair gets a boost of volume and looks just the right amount of dirty-tousled-undone thanks to the unlikely ingredient.

What was I doing before lip scrubs? These life-savers are a must in the seasonal fight against the dreaded chapped winter smile and Royal Apothic’s adorably packaged Scrubbie tubes (I tried Fig and Macaroon) use natural sugar to remove dry, flaky skin. Both flavours taste and smell oh-so-yummy and wipe off easily with a warm washcloth or even paper towel, in a crunch. Vichy’s Liftactiv Serum 10 Supreme packs a superior punch thanks to Rhamnose, a naturally-derived plant sugar that puts the brakes on aging by acting as a skin rejuvenator. Sweeeeeet. That ingredient, combined with your old pal Hyaluronic Acid, makes this potent, fast-absorbing stuff with the classic Vichy scent a new standout that goes on smooth and Feels. Like. Silk.

Who thought that sugar would be a force against stressed, dull skin? Skyn ICELAND’s Nordic Skin Peel pads are perfect for when I’m pressed for time (so, nearly always) and thanks to the lactic acid, a natural acid produced from, you guessed it, sugar, I’m able to exfoliate that layer of dead skin in a hurry. These pads left my skin all a-tingle so I followed with a cooling cream for maximum comfort.
