If getting through the winter without suffering from chapped lips seems like mission impossible, I urge you to read on. I have a small addiction to lip balms in all forms (tube, pot, stick, etc.), and I have spent the last 20 or so years trying every formula I can get my hands on (at any given time I have about 10 different formulas in any purse). And with cold winter winds rolling in, now seems like as good a time as any to put together a comprehensive guide to avoiding the dreaded flaking, cracked lips that arrive without fail every year when below zero temps are an everyday occurrence. Here are a few of my tried, tested and true lip balms, along with a few added must-haves you should really treat yourself to if you want to keep puckering your pout with confidence this winter.
If your lips need a hydration overhaul, try: Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Intensive Lip Repair Balm
There’s a reason this lip balm is a cult classic. It smells refreshing (thanks to eucalyptus and menthol) and has that old-school balm texture, but nothing soothes extreme chapped lips like this deeply hydrating pot. Containing vitamin E and arnica flower oil, it strengthens your moisture barrier to prevent dryness and works wonders on already zapped, tapped-out lips.
If you’re looking for a lil’ bit of colour, try: Vasanti Best Balm Forever Tinted Lip Balm in Hugs
I totally get it. You want hydration but even though it’s the dead of winter, you still want to feel a little glam (no shame in that!). These new balms from Vasanti tick every box for all-star lip balms. It’s healing, nourishing and contains Abyssinian oil (from P.E.I. no less!) which has a high percentage of omega-3 fatty acid for serious moisturizing.
If you want an everyday classic that gets the job done, try: Blistex Blissful Butters Lip Balm
This stick balm contains a blend of shea, mango and tucuma butters that pack a heavy dose of hydration. Shea and mango butters have been used in skincare for ages but tucuma butter is a fairly new ingredient that’s rich in antioxidants and helps improve elasticity and suppleness in the skin (yes, please!). This balm also contains SPF 15 so it’s a great option for anyone hitting the slopes this winter. Plus the stick formula makes it super easy to apply on the go (no sticky fingers here!).
Rodial Lip Scrub
If your lips are already too far gone and are dry and flaky, this scrub is an absolute must. In an easy stick applicator with a doe foot end, the sugar crystals slough away dead skin while panthenol and vitamin E nourish skin. Love this little baby.
Patchology Flash Patch Lip Gels
I was already a big fan of this brand’s gel eye masks, so I was ecstatic to see that there are now lip masks that use the same FlashPatch technology that’s in the eye gels. You only need to have this mask on for five minutes to see results. Packed with niacinamide and green tea extract, these miracle workers soothe chapped, irritated lips but also plump the skin. I love using them before rocking a bright lip on a night out.
Marcelle Revival Eye and Lip Contour Cream
Now we all know that the skin on your lips is important to moisturize, but don’t forget about the skin around your lips. This lightweight cream is formulated specifically for the thin, delicate skin around your eyes and lips. It plumps, hydrates and fights fine lines and sagging. As a lover of bright lipstick, I’m always trying to prevent feathering, so this cream has become a new go-to.
